The Society of Port Engineers of San Francisco, founded in February, 1946, was the first of several Port Engineers' Societies established in cities on both coasts, including New York, LA-LB, Portland and Seattle. The mission of the Society was, and is, to promote training and access to career opportunities for maritime industry personnel.

The Society is also the San Francisco Bay Area's primary social venue for the waterfront industry. Its members are marine engineers and maritime industry professionals who meet regularly to socialize and discuss events and developments within the waterfront industry.

Port engineers, ship's engineers, suppliers, subcontractors, shipyard personnel and a wide variety of people who work in and serve the industry gather monthly at a local restaurant to enjoy dinner and a presentation about some aspect of the maritime industry. A popular golf tournament is held at a local course every June for members and guests, and in December we hold a formal Holiday Dinner Dance.
